Welcome to the HLTA Community South West
A Partnership of Local Authorities
HLTACSW (HLTA Community South West) provides HLTA Preparation for Assessment courses for candidates from across the South West.
How we began.
We started life as a group of Local Authorities working with Plymouth University to give professional development opportunities to teaching assistants studying for their Foundation Degree.
In 2003 the Training & Development Agency (TDA) announced the introduction of HLTA status and we were excited that Teaching Assistants (TAs) finally had an opportunity to be rewarded for supporting schools, teachers and pupils. It was a chance to encourage and recognise those that go the extra mile with their dedication to teaching and learning.
When HLTA status came into effect in 2004 we were supported by grants to Local Authorities. We introduced a wide range of training programmes for TAs – the outcome of which was to be awarded HLTA status.
Where are we now?
Even with the demise of the TDA and a lack of funding from the Department of Education, schools still want to be involved with HLTA training. Each term we have TAs from Bournemouth, Devon, Dorset, Poole and other South West schools and we pick a convenient training venue.
More than a decade on, we’re still working to support schools that want to recognise the skills and value of TAs that take on much more than general classroom support.
Our latest letter to schools and application form show you the three-day training programme that’s currently available. If you have a request for training to take place in a specific location, please get in touch.
